LYNCE, DIDEROT AND D'ALEMBERT

Although this may sound paradoxical, Pedro Santos embodies both the character of the ultimate anti-DJ and of a definite “must to” within the city’s musical scene.

Owner of a rather idiosyncratic record collection which he manipulates with an faultless technique, Santo’s peculiarity comes from his intelligible, and almost poetic, despise for the club goers expectations. This method of operations has produced some really oblique and one of a kind DJ sets; sound pieces that translate to Portuguese the motto "for those who know".

CRACKLE TRAX

Carlos Milhazes renders incomplete any Discogs search. As an infinite human catalogue, Milhazes’ reference map is an odd combination of figures and objects, tokens selected for the least obvious reasons. As such, his selections tend to slide from the library music collage to the straight four-to-the-floor weapons, leaving even the most hardline diggers disoriented.

His latest endeavor is the mysterious record label LAMA, that with just two releases has established a clear aesthetic agenda devoted to the exploration of the leftfield territories of house music.

FACELESS

Attentive and demanding clubbers in Porto are sure to have heard the name of Tiago Carneiro. Thanks to him, Porto can already dance to the sound of some of the most surprising DJ sets, with careful dynamics and selections and structured elegance. With a robust musical culture resulting from continuous and systematic research work, Tiago is one of the leading DJs of his generation.

He is influenced by the sounds that, since the genesis of electronic dance music, have reached us from Detroit, Chicago, Berlin or London. With the birth of the label, Terrain Ahead, which he founded with Ivo Pacheco and Luís Dourado, he has assumed the name of Solution for his own work, as a DJ and musician. Following the editorial principles of open exploration of contemporary electronic musical production in various aesthetic dimensions, the music produced by Solution has been based on combining foundations of Techno, House and Electro with a discreet, firm but contained experimentalism, with a distinctive personality, typically exploring the more murky territories of minimalism, including constructions based on crystalline precision. — (from the artist's website)

GHETTO SHAKEDOWN

If you connect the dots between techno, hip-hop and ghetto-tech, you’ll be drawing Supa’s silhouette. Easily described as “one of the guys”, Ana has been spinning records for some time now, and her effort to built a continuous dialogue between the traditional techno chill and warm groove of bass music has been not only successful, but quite remarkable.

The harmony achieved within this specific articulation is one of the most palpable reasons for the unexpected success of club nights like Thug Unicorn and GRRRL Riot, where Supa serves as an unswerving resident.

FULL BODY CONTACT

Sturqen are the proud and inventive heirs of such acts like Pan Sonic, Kevin Drumm and Orphx. Actually, the latter has remixed one their tracks for the Portuguese label Reaktivate. Winners of two Quartz awards, the duo is responsible for keeping alive the disregard for healthy sound limits, constantly dwelling within the threshold of hearing.

It’s clear that their allegiance is to machinery as binary code seems to be far too fragile to hold such impenetrable sound walls and martial beats. And so, Sturqen keeps on delivering a testimony of sonic violence on each record and live performance.

Debuting on Marvelous Tone with a sonic essay on magnetic tape, this release was the hinge point in the mutation of the record selector into a record producer, and the space comprised by this two poles has been Centeno’s territory since then.

POST-RE-DRUM

Drummer and composer Gustavo Costa is a longstanding figure in Portugal's music scene; since the early 90s he has wandered the fields of death/thrash metal with Genocide, punk rock with Motornoise, and contemporary improvisation with Red Albinos, while performing with or under the direction of artists like Damo Suzuki (Can), John Zorn, Christian Marclay and Steve Mackay (The Stooges).

Currently, he runs the Let's Go To War label, while taking part in numerous projects within and around the scope of Soopa's activity, namely F.R.I.C.S., Mental Liberation Ensemble, Mécanosphère and Lost Gorbachevs, among others.
As Most People Have Been Trained To Be Bored, Gustavo Costa explores his interests in the area of contemporary music practice, employing sources such as percussive objects, prepared piano and electronic synthesis in a body of work influenced by Iannis Xenakis and Giacinto Scelsi, but also by the political commentary of Crass and Dead Kennedys. — (from the artist's website)

RAVE MUSEOLOGY

Tireless investigator of dance music's mechanisms and working parts, and head of respected experimental label Presto!?, the Italian musician produced one of the last couple of years most unique albums "Quantum Jelly" (on label Editions Mego).

An amazing deconstruction of sound and rave culture in the 90's, carefully analysing it's constituent parts for reuse in a very different context, with repetition and isolation as key concepts. His work explores the idea of the "buildup" found in euphoric dance music as a starting point to make a non-uplifting, more introspective piece that implicitly preserves its emotional tension and drama. The music often begins with one simple idea or musical pattern, forcing it into a sonic spiral of percussive, endlessly contagious, arpeggiated melodies.
